A Spanish race track, a British road bike and an awful lot of American greenbacks

What makes a Speed Triple special? Well, unlike virtually every other naked performance bike, it was conceived from the ground up to be what it is here. No detuning, no decontenting. That may not sound like such a big deal, but the result is a cohesive package in which every component has been conceived from the beginning to emphasize accessible performance over race track success. A motorcycle free to be the ultimate riding machine for the road rather than one being pressed into service away from its natural race track home. But, this new Triumph Speed Triple R adds some very superbike-like components with its top-drawer Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes and lightweight wheels. Does a road bike really need race-spec components? Maybe somewhat counter intuitively, we went to Jerez this week to find out. :continue:

Triumph Speed Triple R priced at $15,250

Triumph has quietly priced the Speed Triple R at $15,250, a $3,251 premium over the regular S3. That may sound like a lot of money for an R badge, but it’s actually a huge bargain. Why? Take into account the upgrades and you’re actually saving over three grand.

Update: while $15,250 is the base MSRP, only ABS models will be imported to the US, so you’re looking at $15,999. A regular Speed Triple with ABS retails for $12,799. :continue:

The Speed Triple R comes in black too

Like the Triumph Daytona 675R, this new Triumph Speed Triple R comes with top-shelf Ohlins suspension and Brembo Monoblock brake calipers. It’s visually denoted by a red subframe and unique badges. Unlike that full-on sportsbike, the Speed Triple R also gains fancy forged aluminum wheels that shed 1.7kg in unsprung weight and gains ABS as an option. Oh, and it comes in either black or white. The black looks positively evil, especially with those new headlights. :continue:

Triumph Speed Triple R: the last word in naked performance

This is the Triumph Speed Triple R. It’s the same as the Triumph Speed Triple, except it’s got an Ohlins shock (model unspecified), Ohlins forks (model unspecified), Brembo Monoblock calipers, PVM forged aluminum wheels and, excitingly, “carbon fiber parts as standard.” That’s a good thing. The regular Speed Triple is already amazing, so nicer suspension and better brakes should make it even more amazing. Plus, there’s a red subframe just like the Triumph Daytona 675R, and red subframes are the new speedholes in terms of pointless, but utterly awesome aesthetic frippery. In case it’s not clear, we want to lick every single inch of this motorcycle before making dirty, dirty love to it.

Update: Triumph reached out this morning to say, like the 675R, the Speed Triple R is equipped with with top-shelf Ohlins NIX30 forks and a TTX36 shock. That’s over $4,000 in suspension and brake calipers. Thanks guys.

Now, thanks to one of our European friends, we’ve got more details on it and all the other new bikes. How’s a 137bhp Triumph Tiger Explorer sound, for starters? :continue:

Spy Photo: Triumph Explorer 1200

This is the clearest spy photo yet of Triumph’s much-rumored big new adventure tourer. Said to be equipped with a 1200cc triple producing around 130bhp, the Triumph Explorer 1200 is shown here with an exposed tubular frame, bodywork and big, comfy seats similar to that of the Triumph Tiger 800. Other than the larger motor, the biggest difference appears to be a single-sided shaft drive arrangement very similar to BMW’s Paralever. Making the rounds of the rumor mill is also talk of a Triumph Speed Triple R. In keeping with R-model configuration, the high-spec 1050 would likely wear upgraded suspension, brakes and wheels.
