Dirt Bikes over Venice Beach

Red Bull X-Fighters returns to America this weekend after a two week absence. The FMX event will take place at SoCal’s historic Glen Helen Raceway, which effectively birthed the sport as a spinoff of motocross racing. To promote the race, Ronnie Renner, Danny Torres, Keith Sayers and Maikel Melero (seen here) staged a little exhibition on Venice Beach. Sure beats roller bladers.

Julien Dupont rides Rio

These photos were snapped in Rio de Janeiro’ s Favela do Vidigal as Julien Dupont used the steep hillsides, crowded rooftops and poured-concrete construction as an obstacle course. Vidigal enjoys some of the city’s most stunning views, located on the slope behind Praia de Ipanema and running right up to that beach’s luxury hotels.

Update: now with video

Pulling wheelies on the Burj al Arab’s helipad

Just 79 feet wide and dropping 690 feet to the ocean below, the helicopter pad hanging off the side of Dubai’s Burj al Arab is hardly the kind of place you or I would want to pull a wheelie, but that’s just what FMX athlete Danny Torres did yesterday to promote an upcoming round of Red Bull X-Fighters in the emirate. With the Burj Khalifa in the background, these are stunning photos.

Photos: dirt bikes over Burj Khalifa

Constructed at a cost of $1.5 billion, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa is, at 2,723 feet, the world’s tallest building. Here, FMX athlete Josh Sheehan isn’t quite clearing that height, but the location and perspective makes for a stunning series of photos nonetheless.

Watch a Triumph Street Triple get very, very dirty

What happens when you take a Triumph Street Triple stunt bike, complete with cage and short gearing and fit it with knobbies? Good things happen. Very good things. :continue:

Watch Ernie Vigil stunt…a Triumph Scrambler?!

Videos of our buddy Ernie Vigil wheelying, drifting and just generally misbehaving on a motorcycle are a dime a dozen. But they’re usually on a generic sportsbike or a Triumph Speed Triple or some such expected machine. Here, he does all that on a 58bhp, 500lbs Triumph Scrambler. The result is, unexpectedly, beautiful. :continue:

Aaron Colton stunts Trinidad

Putting a motorcycle in an unlikely place almost always leads to interesting photos. Here, the Justin Bieber of motorcycle stunt riding, the 20-year old Aaron Colton, takes his CBR600RR stunt bike to Ft. George in Trinidad. A sportsbike wouldn’t be our first choice for precipitous mountain trails, deep sandy beaches or leafy forests, but that’s kinda the point.

Geriatric stunters terrorize Barber

Featuring Nick Apex and Ernie Vigil’s exceptionally stylish granddads, Jason DiSalvo moonlighting as a security guard, a very wet Barber Motorsports Park and drifting Triumph Speed Triples, think of this video as the English brand’s take on last month’s epic Icon drift fest. The video kicks off Triumph’s partnership with Barber, which will see it sponsor AMA races and the track’s vintage festival. Who wants to bet Nick and Ernie nearly pissed themselves in fear when they were told they’d have to stunt their way through Barber’s museum and its priceless collection of classic motorcycles? :continue:

Jumper: Matt Wadsworth

Like the avatar on his custom helmet, Englishman Matt Wadsworth is blind as a bat. From what I understood overhearing him describe the sensation, the accomplished lutenist sees only vague impressions of light when looking at the sun. Regardless, he is determined to set a 100-foot world record for distance jumping on his Honda CRF450R. Together with his trainer, two-time AMA Motocross Champion Micky Dymond, the two have developed a simple system of communication that already has Matt reaching just over 60 feet. There are no training wheels, no fancy balancing devices, no computer-assisted guidance system for the bike, just Matt and Micky talking over a two-way radio. Watching a few feet from the massive earth mound as they practiced, I felt like I was a kid in the ’60s witnessing some strange guy named Evel do the impossible for the first time.
