On Sunday, Chip Yates rode his 240bhp electric superbike up Pikes Peak in 12:50.094, over four minutes faster than any other electric motorcycle and just 1:39 behind race winner Carlin Dunne’s Ducati Multistrada. Here’s video from that record-breaking climb. :continue:
Completing the 12.42-mile course in a record 11:11.32, Carlin Dunne has set a new all-time record for the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. The extraordinary thing is that this was Carlin’s first visit to The Race To The Clouds and he won not on a dedicated race bike, but on his dealership’s (Ducati Santa Barbara) demo Ducati Multistrada.
“When the flag dropped I got the holeshot and went for it,” stated Carin. “The whole week’s worth of setup work with my technician Sam Swain came together and the Multistrada 1200 worked flawlessly to give us the win.” Here’s photos of his victory. We’ll update with video when it becomes available.
Practicing for the race on June 26, Chip Yates put in his first runs up Pikes Peak this weekend. “I was leaned over dragging my knee at more than 100mph at Bottomless Pit corner, with a 3,000 foot dropoff on my left and a giant snowbank on my right,” says Chip. “This has to be the most extreme racing spectacle in the United States.” This is his first visit to the mountain, but riding his 240bhp, 400lb/ft electric superbike, Chip still placed seventh out of 33 riders in practice. :continue:
Becoming the most powerful motorcycle of any kind ever to enter the race, we’re exclusively revealing that Chip Yates will be racing his 240bhp, 365lb/ft electric superbike at Pikes Peak on June 26. Chip’s bike is currently set up for paved tracks, where he made history by placing second in a race against gasoline superbikes back in January. With the help of a friend, we uncovered this news yesterday, but Chip’s now agreed to go on-record. :continue:
Ducati is ramping up for racing at Pikes Peak again this year. Last week it released the Ducati Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak special edition ($2,000 for paint) and now it’s finally gotten around to releasing a proper video from last year’s race. Did you realize these guys were racing on the dirt with cut slicks?! :continue:
Last year, two mostly-stock Ducati Multistrada 1200s placed second and sixth at Colorado’s Pikes Peak Hillclimb. This year, they intend to win. Before they do, this special edition commemorates last year’s race bike. In keeping with the mostly-stock theme, this special edition is mostly just paint, but there’s a few parts from the performance catalog thrown in too — a short carbon windscreen, carbon mudguard, Termignoni pipe and red stitching on the seat. Greg Tracy and Alexander Smith will be entering two similar bikes in the Race to the Clouds on June 26.
Update: the North American Pikes Peak edition swaps the exhaust for a little numbered plaque and will cost $21,995 when it goes on-sale in June. So yeah, $2,000 for paint.
Here’s a short documentary filmed at Pikes Peak this weekend as Greg Tracy won the 1200cc class aboard a 2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200 S. It’s a neat little look inside head of the racer, but the really impressive thing here is that it was all shot on iPhone 4s. The secret to doing that? Apparently an Owle Bubo camera mount that adds the ability to use tripods, lenses and microphones. The product looks so good that I think this just tipped me over the edge into upgrading to the iPhone 4 a year early. We’ve also got some interesting technical info on the Multistradas from the race.> :continue:
The 2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200 S placed first and third in its 1200cc class and second and sixth overall at its first ever race, the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. Five-time champ Greg Tracy rode the second place bike, reaching a top speed of 137mph at one point during the 12.42-mile, part dirt/part asphalt, 156-turn hillclimb. These are the first high-res photos of the Ducatis to come out of yesterday’s race. > :continue:
On June 27, five-time winner Greg Tracy will tackle the Pike’s Peak Hillclimb aboard this nearly-stock 2010 Ducati Mulstistrada 1200. Climbing 4,721 feet in 12.42 miles over 156 turns, The Race to the Clouds is a uniquely dangerous, fast race on a mixture of dirt, gravel and pavement. If that’s not enough, there’s often no barrier between the road and thousands of feet of void. Here’s video of Greg practicing for the race.> :continue:
