Watch a biker get wiped out on a Russian highway

The dash cam on this car was running just as a Mazda3 collides with a rider on an urban highway in Russia. The results…aren’t good. This is a pretty terrifying accident, so don’t watch if your squeamish if if your mother is in the room. The rider suffered a concussion and open fractures on his left arm and leg. What should he have done differently to avoid this crash? :continue:

Photo: Guy Martin’s epic NW200 crash

Believe it or not, but crash-prone road racer Guy Martin escaped this crash at the NW200 Saturday without major injury. The same can’t be said for his GSX-R600. “It was unfortunate that Guy had to sit out the meeting after a very nasty crash in the opening race on Saturday,” stated team manager Phillip Neill. “He took a fairly hefty bang on the head and was just not fit enough to race on, so it was best option.”

“I’m disappointed to miss out on the meeting and pretty frustrated as I didn’t feel I was doing anything wrong when I tucked the front, even though the bike does get a bit unsettled through that bumpy section,” understates Guy. “I had a really stiff neck after the crash and I had taken a bit of a battering so it was best to sit it out. I’ll be grand for the TT.”

Is this the first totaled 1199?

This 23-photo sequence shows South African Superbike rider Chris Leeson crashing his Ducati 1199 Panigale in Turn 1 at the Kyalami Race Track. Chris was entering the turn at high speed when he lost the front over the track’s notoriously bumpy pavement. No major injuries, to the rider at least. As you can see in the photos, the Ducati sheds pretty much every major sticky-outy part.

Why real dirt bike boots prevent face scars

I’ve had these fantastic Sidis on my desk for a while now, but living in New York, don’t have access to any dirtbikes or any nearby dirt. That’s a pity, because the Crossfire SRS boots are made in Italy, allow your ankle to articulate, are famously comfortable and do an excellent job of protecting your bones. Too bad I wasn’t wearing them when I crashed a dirt bike a while back. Here’s what happened because I didn’t use proper footwear. :continue:

This is the city gear that saved my life

About a month ago, I had a terrible motorcycle accident here in LA. Six broken bones, a week in the hospital and three surgeries. About as bad as it gets, right? Well, not quite. That’s thanks to the gear I was wearing — head-to-toe protection. But, I wasn’t in leathers or ungainly Cordura or anything like that, I was in jeans and a jacket; the kind of thing I wear to go to a meeting or a bar. Combining this level of protection with stealthy looks isn’t easy, but it sure was effective. Here’s a break down. :continue:

Quick, everyone laugh at this dumb squid

An HFL PSA: if your I’m-trying-so-hard-that-I-crash-on-The-Snake pace isn’t fast enough to dust a dirt bike wearing knobby tires, maybe this whole motorcycle thing isn’t for you. Bet the guy in this video wishes we’d told him that before last weekend, when he did just that on his Kawasaki-green Gixxer. Sick riding skills, brah. :continue:

Two guys, one really bad crash

On January 28th, I had a terrible bike crash and ended up in hospital for a week with six broken bones. In a shocking case of inadvertent symmetry, that bike was an Aprilia Mana, the same bike Wes used as a mobility bike last summer when he broke his left arm. My head’s been pretty fucked up on painkillers since, but finally, here’s the story of what happened in the crash, afterwards and how I’m going to heal up. Those with small children or weak stomachs should look away now.

Update: Now with broken bone and bike photos. :continue:

Stuck in the mud

Back in November, I explained that the unique appeal of the Ural sidecars is that they’ll go where no other vehicle can. A unique combination of compact dimensions, relatively light weight and 2WD makes them virtually unstoppable. Well, here’s one place they won’t go. This Austrian rider somehow managed to bury his in a mud pit smack in the middle of a Panzer obstacle course. :continue:

Watch Quinn Cody eat shit

Traversing a wash, the front wheel of American Quinn Cody’s CRF450 appears to catch an obstacle, launching him into an endo at high speed. Reports from the hospital indicate a broken collar bone and some unspecified injuries to his head, but indicate that he’s “not in serious condition.” Cody is the second American to withdraw from the Dakar this year, electrical gremlins brought Jonah Street to a halt. The retirement gave Street the opportunity to announce his retirement from the sport. :continue:

Video: the crash that cost Marc Marque a minute

Just after the checkered flag was waved for Friday’s free practice at Phillip Island, Marc Marquez ran into the back of fellow Moto2 rider Ratthapark Wilairot at high speed. The FIM found Marquez’s riding to be of, “an irresponsible manner, causing danger to Wilairot which is an infringement of Article 1.21.2 of the 2011 FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Regulations.” As a result, the Spaniard had a full minute added to his qualifying time, meaning he started the race in 38th and last position. Didn’t seem to affect his performance much though. :continue:
