2010 BMW R1200GS: DOHC, 110bhp, 88lb/ft

Like we told you in September, the 2010 BMW R1200GS borrows the DOHC engine with four valves per cylinder from the HP2 Sport to deliver more power, more torque and higher revs. Power and torque from the 1,170cc boxer-twin are up five percent to 110bhp at 7,750rpm and 88lb/ft at 6,000rpm, while the redline rises from 8,000 to 8,500rpm. There’s also a new electronic exhaust flap designed to improve the engine’s sound. Unlike the HP2 Sport, the GS retains its two spark plugs per cylinder arrangement. The engine prefers fuel with a 95-98 RON rating, but optional equipment can enable it to run on 91 RON with slightly reduced performance. Visually, the new model is virtually identical to the previous generation, with the two valve cover bolts being the easiest way to distinguish new from old (the previous model had four bolts on each cover). The press release follows.
