Ducati Hypermotard 796: smaller and cheaper for 2010
Other logical changes would be a switch to non-adjustable forks and other running gear on par with the Monster 696, all designed to keep costs low in relation to the more expensive 1100 version. But, unlike the name and the launch date, that information is only informed speculation.
The Hypermotard 1100 makes 90bhp at 7,750rpm and 76lb/ft of torque at 4,750rpm. The Monster 696 makes 80bhp at 9,000rpm and 50.6lb/ft at 7,750rpm. If there are changes made to the smaller motor in order to justify the "796" designation, it's likely that they'll result in a fatter torque cover rather than more outright power.
In addition to the Hypermotard 796, the water-cooled Ducati Strada Aperta, a "practical superbike" in the mold of the KTM 990 SMT, is also planned for 2010 and ABS could also be coming to the Monster 696, making it more new rider-friendly.

I hope they call it the Hypomotard.
They will call it Recessionretard.
The 620 MTS was a failure...but was a fun bike, with a welcome, slightly lower seat. It makes sense...why not make use of the platform. Could be a fun commuter. I'm more interested in the Aperta. Heated seat and grips, please. Is embedded GPS too much to ask?
I usually like motards. I'm particularly fond of KTM's take on the idea. This one looks pretty nice, but I would be worried about the exhaust. First good bump over a curb, and that thing is going to collapse or get ripped off the engine.
I'd give it A- on style points, but D+ on functionality.
dream come true
Or the "Retard" (as in a "remake").
How 'bout Minitard?
Or "Hypermo-turd"?
Having said that, I wouldn't mind one if it were cheap enough...

despite the 1100cc hypermotard's fun factor it's slightly anemic on power. a 796cc will be sloth-like.
DoctorNine,
That is the same exhaust header Ducati has used for decades....on nearly every model! Never seen one "ripped off" by a bump.
I love the Hyper 1100...great bike in the twisties. Can't wait to ride this one!!!
No Ducati Superbike has ever been meant to be ridden has hard a supermoto either.
Everybody is talking about the bike, but i still do not know when is it going to be available!!!!!! First quarter of 2010 doesn't cut it for me....
Sat on the new machine at the local Ducati shop. With 15 inches of snow on the ground, nothing else to do, and couldn't ride it in that situation.
It sits really well. Very comfortable and you can tell it is a bit shorter than the 1100. Very light feel, and absolutely stunning in all black.
Looks like my new bike this spring.
