great write up. Makes me Glad I don't live in the city.
Someday Grant I will tell you the story of riding my 1975 CB750 through that section of brooklyn (including the greenpoint bridge) and encountering a fuel oil spill and having to ride through it. I wish I could tell you it was a long time ago but summer of 2006 wasn't that long ago. The fear and crappy road condition plots on your graph should be much higher.
Otherwise looks like fun.
Is that a photo of a giant sewage digester? Great write up, but holy shit NY sounds like a nightmare for bikers (still want to visit soon), I thought isolated Perth (Australia) was bad for cop persecution, but getting booked for speeding at the lights takes the cake. (I ride a k1200R and a cop here recently tried to defect my bike because it "doesn't have a chain guard"!!! (its a shaft drive)) at least they are inept here not just plain nasty.
Is it me or are natural beauty and gear position the exact same line, just sunken for natural beauty?
Seriously though, this is my old neighborhood and what you say of Greenpoint and the city in general is spot on. I don't have a motorcycle but the rest really rings true. I don't plan to have a motorcycle until I leave NY either.
A counterpoint to the ticket at a red light story, I got a ticket last year for driving without a seatbelt while I was wearing my seatbelt. It was a ridiculous exchange with the cop too. " But I'm wearing my seatbelt right now", "No, you're not", etc. I beat it though.
Yep, those're the shit tits.
Great write-up.
"...in a city thats out to get me." I love that phrase. It's packed with meaning.
I don't ride for pleasure through the city streets anymore (I take the hour ride north to hit the twisties. Still, there's something you get when you venture out on the urban grid. Maybe that's what you're hitting on.
It's knowing that you're doing something that most pussies would never do; and surviving. All while not really making a big deal out of what you're doing--If that makes sense.
Authentic artical, I happened to be blessed and cursed, owning that exact bike and living only minutes from Newtown creek. The read hits close to home. I could not have put the riding feeling into better words. Ill see you in shit tit's with a common secret. Cheers
The poetic attempts to make it sound edgier than it is are a bit over the top. Don't ride like a jackass and you won't have any problems.
