2009 Kawasaki Ninja 650R / ER6-f gets big boy looks, revised chassis

2009_ER-6F.jpgAlready an appealingly practical, basic motorcycle, the 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 650R adapts a ZX-6R-style fairing for better looks and chassis, suspension and engine refinements to make it a better all-rounder. The key to the little Ninja’s appeal is its 650cc parallel-twin engine — essentially one half of a ZX-12R’s — with 72bhp and 48.5lb/ft; it’s both punchy and characterful. For 2009 its fuel-injection system has been revised for more low-down torque and greater smoothness, which is really what it needed most as the previous generation’s snatchy throttle made it intimidating to novices; the market to which it’s targeted.
The engine also gets most of its cooling moved inside the cases (rather than through external hoses) and a new catalyzer capable of removing more harmful emissions. All this brings it in line with Euro-III emissions regulations.

2009_Ninja_650R.jpgTo reduce vibrations, the chassis’ rigidity balance has been revised and new rubber mounts attach the frame to the rear of the engine. The handlebars are now rubber-mounted too, while the foot pegs get rubber treads. The seat has also been made slimmer and lower to make the bike less intimidating to new riders.

2009_ER-6F-2.jpgKawasaki also claim other changes have been made to the suspension and swingarm to make the 650R lighter handling, but at this point don’t offer specifics. It’s priced at $6,799 in the US.

2009_Ninja_650R-4.jpgThe company isn't quoting a revised weight, but we don't see any reason why it should climb above the previous model's novice-friendly 178kg / 392lb dry weight.

Malaysia Price?

with the economy currently being what it is, what would be a fair OTD (out the door) all cash offer from a dealership. sticker price is 6,799 plus tax.
Would 15-20% off list be a fair deal?

I'm not sure. I'm gonna be honest and say that I have never even ridden a bike even though I am leaning towards this one when I do buy one. I don't think %15-20 would fly too well even with the economy the way it is. However, I say go ahead and try. The worst they can do is say no. With cash up front, I'd say about %10 off list price.

Buy a use '08 for $5K.

My husband just bought an 09 Ninja 650. The salesman quoted the price out the door as $8299. Then he told us to look around the showroom, it was full of bikes with just a handful of people browsing, no one was buying anything. He told my husband to make an offer. He got it for $7600 out the door. We're in Southern California, we can pretty much ride year round so the market is a little different.
Depending on what dealership you go to, you can still get a good deal. If you can afford to buy a bike, they're still going to want your money. Just do your homework. Know how much the MSRP is and shop around. Sometimes they give discounts on gear and services.
Buying used from a private seller is a good idea. My husband wanted the upgrades on the 09 650 even though he could have found a used one for a lot less.

I'm out in Southern California and got my '09 Ninja 650 for exactly $7600. This was including all taxes/registration/destination fees.

Well, I bought the 2008 model 650R a year ago in February. It was $6500 out the door with all fees (after much drama of course). That was the MSRP price at the time. I live in NC and the showroom was baron of people in th winter. You just have to buy it at the right time.

I got a 650R 08 for 5500$ from australia. Got a really nice deal.... you can get 08 models for much cheaper...

In Malaysia, it cost RM41K (USD12k).
Reason? Our government wants to protect our product. - high tax.

Does anyone know the Australian price for the kawasaki Ninja 650r???
