SPOT satellite messenger lets others know where you are
By using satellites to communicate GPS data about its location, the SPOT satellite messenger could provide an invaluable lifeline to motorcyclists. Not dependent on cell phone networks and able to work in any country, it can call for help, notifying emergency services of your exact location or giving friends and family peace of mind by transmitting that data to them by e-mail or SMS.
The SPOT is also capable of breadcrumbing, tracking your journey by
transmitting and saving coordinates at regular intervals. This could
prove handy for figuring out where you've ridden once you're home, or
for alerting others of your progress.
Even though it'd make sense to incorporate these capabilities into a GPS navigation device, the SPOT's standalone nature finds merit in its ruggedness, portability, long battery life and the ability to be carried out of harm's way.
We'd carry one in a jacket pocket and keep it in track mode. That way we could map the position of good rides and interesting places at a later date and should we crash, be knocked unconscious or otherwise be rendered unable to call for help or damage the unit, there’d be a copy of our position on record, available to people able to offer help.
