Gore-Tex invents waterproof leather
Photo: Jorge.HipsterBikers have always had to choose between the looks, durability and safety of leather and staying dry in textile garments. If Gore-Tex has its way, that will be a thing of the past. The company claims to have invented a process for laminating leather that makes it both waterproof and breathable and doesn’t involve their usual membrane.
If the laminate works as promised, this could be a significant milestone for motorcycle clothing. Not only would it free motorcyclists from the need to wear bulky, Bibendum-esque textile suits every time it goes a bit cloudy, but also the need to sacrifice safety to stay warm and dry.
In continuing its tradition of being early adopters of any new safety or comfort development, Rukka is already offering the material in its range for both men and women. Expect others to follow shortly.
