Florida lawmaker wants to punish, not educate

floridabill.jpgRep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera is sponsoring a bill that is truly staggering to the mind. According to a report by the Associated Press, Lopez-Cantera said the state needs to send a tough message to reckless motorcyclists on the highway. That message being bill HB 137, which allows for the confiscation of a rider's machine, fines, loss of license, and the imprisonment of any rider charged with reckless driving or exceeding the speed limit by 50mph.

We guess mandatory road testing, rider education programs and a tiered license system have all failed so far because ... ? Sorry, we forgot. In Florida, they don't do those kinds of things. They just leave it to Johnny Law and his application of the rather nebulous term "reckless driving."
